What are the 10 most important things to avoid extra costs in industrial sound attenuation?
Sound attenuation becomes a more and more important environmental matter, which has been noticed increasingly amount also in legislation and regulations. Among others for example China has passed a law in the end of year 2016 that levies taxes on pollution, but ignores carbon dioxide. So the noise problem is rated in Asia even bigger environmental issue than the major things contributing to Global warming. (Re: “No tax on CO2 emissions in China’s new environment law”. In order to avoid noise created by industrial processes & equipment and minimize the costs to prevent it Allstars Engineering Group has listed together with their sound attenuation expert Henrik Pettersson (M. Sc., Chemical Engineering) 10 most important things to be taken into account in engineering phase:
1. Pay attention to sound attenuation in early engineering phase
- lot of noise reduction can be done already during process and lay-out engineering
2. Pay attention to the order of the equipment
- order of process equipment may have significant meaning to the noise level
3. Minimize the outblowing points of air ducts on the roof
- combine systems ducts and pipes before blowing out (amount of sound attenuators raise the cost)
4. Consider the additional process equipment in the sense of sound attenuation too
- the certain type of heat exchanger or separators may substitute even the separate sound attenuators
5. As equipment manufacturer yourself let attenuation expert consider your equipment construction in noise point of view
6. Select the equipment paying the attention to low noise levels
- industrial sound attenuators may cost more than the fans or other noise source itself
- compare the combined price of sound attenuator and the fan before selecting it
- pay attention to low frequencies, they are the most difficult to attenuate
7. Request sufficient noise data from equipment supplier by octave bands
- total noise level data is not enough to make analysis and calculations. Octave bands and in some cases 1/3 octave bands are required
- ask this data to be included together with quotation
8. Find out by accurate sound measurements from your old references, the real sound level
- do not assume anything ( it is too expensive)
9. Before adding silencers calculate the total sound level and compare to the requirements
- silencing wrong items may not bring the total sound level to the goal
10. Use outside expertise already in the beginning
Earlier the more in-expensive alternative.
